History Of Barbados
It is reported that the Portuguese discovered Barbados on their way to Brazil. (It should be noted that the indigenous Arawaks and Caribs were inhabitants prior to European “discovery”).
The word “Barbados” literally means the bearded ones and it has been conjectured that the island takes its name hanging roots of the bearded fig tree.
The British landed at what is now Holetown in 1625 and a settlement was established after that sometime between 1627 and 1628. Until it gained independence in 1966, Barbados was the only colony never to change hands between the European powers.
